When setting up the subwoofer crossover, you want the right amount of overlap between the bass of the subwoofer and the frequency range of the main speaker unit. Too little overlap and music will sound disjointed and too much overlap will mean the bass will be too overbearing. However, the right subwoofer crossover settings will ensure a pleasant and enjoyable listening experience.

What Is A Good Frequency Response For Subwoofers & What Crossover It Should Be Set To?

With this approach, you can better judge the quality of the sound. A larger steepness or greater slope means that the crossover is very effective in filtering out a specific sound frequency before sending it out from a speaker system. By installing an in-line crossover system, you can improve the sounds of your system a great deal, especially if you have a component speaker system. If you’re using separate amplifiers for your front and rear speakers, the active crossover of the AV receiver will be bypassed. If the passive subwoofer has several drivers, then it needs a crossover. A simple series capacitor crossover to block the main speakers’ low frequencies would be ideal. On the contrary, you may consider using a Subwoofer Plate Amplifier to transform the subwoofer from passive to active. However, the general gist of setting up a subwoofer crossover is that you need to set it up according to your ear and preference. The Importance of Subwoofers for Your Sound System

If your system has channels with both speakers and a subwoofer, make sure your system is set up with the two speakers set up in-line with the subwoofer. The crossover frequencies can be set as low as 60Hz or as high as several kilohertz, depending on the manufacturer. Typically, 2-way loudspeaker systems will use a crossover frequency as low as 200Hz, while 3-way speakers will use frequencies as high as 1kHz. This is because typical manufacturer recommendations for 3-way speaker systems typically use bass-mid-tweeter speaker configurations as well. Manufacturer recommendations also change over time, and the numbers will vary from system to system.

A passive crossover separates this frequency and sends it to the appropriate speaker. However, if we switch back the phase switch, the main speaker’s driver will move backward as the subwoofer’s driver moves outward. The two speakers are out of phase, and the overall bass production is reduced. This term means that it is a speaker unit that is truly full-range audio when it comes to its specifications and capabilities. It can usually play down sounds from audio sources with frequencies as low as 20 Hz.

There are many people with huge towers that set their subs at 80hz even though their speakers play down to 30hz. Of course, there are no absolutes, so if a 60hz crossover sounds better, there is nothing wrong with it. If you don’t have a subwoofer, or if your speaker has a built in subwoofer, then you can use the large setting for the main front left/right channels.

Listen for a smooth transition between speakers and subwoofer. Ideally, the blending will be so seamless, you won’t be able to localize the bass and everything will play in unison. As for the crossover points, it is always better to set your crossover at least an octave above the -3dB point of your speakers (2x the -3dB frequency). For your mains, if the -3dB point is 60Hz, the ideal xover would be 120Hz for better dynamics and fidelity . The first reason is if your receiver is handling the crossover your sub doesn't have too.

At 80Hz (if that is the crossover setting that you’ve chosen), the subs play everything lower, the speakers play everything higher. High-Pass Crossover is the frequency above the low-pass crossover where your speakers will start working and take over from a subwoofer. If you’re using a subwoofer that features a high-pass crossover, it’ll be fixed and will remain the same regardless of your set up. LFE + Main is a crossover mode that we find in sound systems where it sends deep sounds lower than the crossover point to both the subwoofer and speakers. It’s configurable, and you can try setting it up for your sound system, but it’s often unstable, and it would be best to leave this setting to default. The good frequency response for the rear speaker is 70Hz to 120Khz and should be set to 80Hz crossover because they always don’t have low bass frequencies to play.
